First round update
The first round of season 2018/19 is under our belts with some mixed results on the scoreboard but a really good sense of optimism for the rest of the season. We have a Women's team, 5 Senior men's teams and 7 Junior teams (girls and boys) who all got out on the cricket field this weekend. Attendance has been great down at the club so far. If you haven't been down yet, make sure you come along soon.
First, the Women have now played two games and with a new look line up are starting to get some better coordination as a team and more confidence in their play. We've unfortunately had two narrow losses but we're definitely on the improve - and seeing as the ladies went up a grade it has been a pretty solid start.
In our senior men's, our First XI have got their loss out of the way for the season. Playing Toorak-Prahan we did some very handy work bowling and in the field on day one, undone by a bit of shaky batting on day 2. We know that under any circumstances Toorak-Prahan are going to be challenging for us but the buys took a number of positives out of the experience and we'll all be better for getting that one out of the way.
Our Second XI, playing at Ramsden St had a very good day out in the field on day one and almost got there with the bat on day 2 falling just short. Fantastic performance from James Bluer with both ball and bat and congratulations to Finn Peake and Dane Harvey our two juniors in the side who both proved they were comfortable at this level. We expect to see a lot more from both these boys in the coming weeks. You will notice that I've not said yet that we lost the game as it is subject to a protest given our opposition slotted in what we believe was an illegal substitute. The ECA will sort this one out for us.
Our Third XI, playing their only game in B grade, had a really good win. Knocking the opposition over for a shade over 200 on day one, we got there with plenty of wickets and plenty of overs to spare. Fabulous performance with the bat from Harro and Spock but in general a very well-rounded team performance. This team will drop down to C grade as of next week and should be very strong at that level for the rest of the season.
Our Fourth XI (Limited Overs) side narrowly lost. Posting 220 after the 35 overs we were over-run by sundries in the final over. Unfortunately we were always a bowler short and our bowlers (apart from Geoff Smith) were short of some training time. So 30 sundries was too much for us to carry with that total. Good performance though and a very enjoyable day's cricket. Rocket, Cal Behmer and Harry and Charlie Robinson were standouts with the bat. The Robinsons didn't do too badly with the ball either.
Our Fifth XI (E Grade) also had a pretty good performance. Great to see our juniors doing well at this level, Matthew Henry, Felix Blakey (first game for the club), Matthew Tulk and Max Sundram all had terrific games - with Max Sundram in particular notching his first ever 50! Well done. Craig Harris also gets a mention, back at the club after a year off and knocking up his highest ever score.
So, a mixed set of results to start the season, but lots of positives to take away from it. Looking forward to the one-day rounds over the next month or so.
