Women’s 1st XI beat Preston to lock in Grand Final on 15 March

The Women’s team played our nemesis in the semi final on the weekend, playing Preston Druids for the 4th time of the season with them being the only side we haven’t beaten. Even though one of the losses was big, we always felt like we the results should have been different.

We agreed to start early at the Druids request and got the early win with Sherrin winning the toss and batting. The Druids bowling attack can be metronomically full and straight, so the batters knew we had to be patient and build partnerships.

Sherrin and Chloe opened and got to 1-30 off 8 before Chloe (15 off 24) nicked off after seeing off a lot of good bowling. This brought Alex. C to the crease, and with the skipper they put on the biggest partnership of the game. In the 11th over the Druids brought back their spearhead to try and break the partnership, instead of being the turning point the Druids were hoping for Sherrin and Alex took 14 off the over, the score being 1/57 off 11 it was our turning point.

The partnership was broken in the 17th over with Alex (24 off 33) after a technically perfect innings nudging one round the corner to the 45.  Unfortunately, Sherrin was out chasing a wide ball outside off in the next over ending a brilliant captain’s knock with 49 off 49.

We needed a steadying partnership and Sophie and Tylah provided it. Tylah (11 off 17) looked like taking the game away from the Druids before the cricket gods once again intervened playing on in unlucky fashion. Soph 41 not out off 34, smashed the Druids around the park in a massive innings for us that was punctuated with some ballistic running with a few casualties resulting. Our innings closed at 9/161 off 29.1 a very competitive total batting first in a semi-final.

Ty and Chloe opened the bowling and stuck to their plans, with Chloe dismissing the opener who made 82 against us the week before, LBW for 3. We changed ends after 5 overs with Druids 1-19 a big win for us.

The Druids had a good patch after 12 overs they were 1/58. Saina who bowled her best spell of the year bowled the 13th over. The batters made the mistake of trying to run 2 on Alex.Cs arm and Saina took it cleanly and affected the run out. 4 balls later Saina (1/32 off 6) bowled a peach to dismiss the other opener who finished with 42 off 46, leaving the Druids at 3/63.

The Druids Captain steadied the ship until Alex. C bowled her finishing a great spell of 1/28 off 6 in the 20th over leaving the score at 4/106. From there Tylah (0/27 0ff 6), Chloe (1/18 off 6) and Sophie applied the clamps but the Druids still had 1 strong batter at the crease. We started the 29th over with the Druids needing 16 to win off 12. First ball of the over they tried to take a quick single as it squirted past Sherrin behind the stumps, Sherrin chased it down and flicked the ball backwards no look to run out their best remaining batter in a huge moment. Chloe bowled an unplayable over which Soph followed up in the 30th and the Druids we 10 runs short. It was a great team effort the fielding and chat was great all day.  The boundary was impenetrable in the last 10 overs thanks to Kat, Rhi and Alex. C saving heaps of runs.

Junior Finals

The season is still alive for U14B! having beaten Camberwell in style in the semi, we are now chasing 195 for victory against Holy Trinity at Hayes Park from 5pm tonight!

Playing our semi-final away to Camberwell — having lost to them in a high-scoring thriller in the final round — definitely gave us underdog status. Camberwell won the toss and elected to bat, but may have had a touch of overconfidence in their hearts. Some accurate early overs and great catching from Hans, Arie, Eddie, Leo and Arnoud saw them crumble to 7–38 with Gabe grabbing 2 wickets and Flynn bamboozling them in the flight to nab 3-5! A steadying eighth-wicket partnership gave Camberwell a glimmer of hope, before Arie knocked over two more in quick time and Xavier got the 10th wicket with his first ball, wrapping up their innings for 81 in just 20.1 overs.

It looked like it might be a close match after Camberwell then removed Arul, Arnoud and Arie to have us at 3–16, before Ned (23), Pramish (19) and Eddie (9) steadied to have us at 5–63 at the close of day one - just 19 short of victory. We returned on Friday to pass the target with 3 wickets in hand and book our place in the Grand Final vs Holy Trinity this Thu 5th and Fri 6th at Hayes Park, Thornbury. Come on down and show your support from 5pm on both nights — and see if CHCC can go back-to-back in U14B2 H M Wilkinson!

Whatever happens it’s been a fabulous season in U14B with growth and contributions right across our increasingly tight squad of 12, ably led by Josh Reid and supported by Matt Thomas. Particularly impressive to have Arnoud 2nd in the league with 269 runs @ 67 and Gabe Reid now topping the league bowling table with 13 wickets @ 9.15, not to mention Flynn 3rd in the league with 11 @10.5!
